  • Laura Ashley’s Belongings Under the Hammer

    • Some of the lots from Laura Ashley\'s home
Laura Ashley was famous for her clothes and home furnishings – and now belongings from her own family home are to be sold at auction by McCartneys.

Rhydoldog House near Rhayder in Powys was the Ashley family home for more than 36 years. It is set in stunning countryside which is said to have inspired the designer’s floral prints.

The Ashley family kept the house after Laura Ashley’s death in 1985, but they have recently sold the property, and some of the contents are to be sold at McCartneys auction in Ludlow later this month.

“With more than 200 lots from the Ashley family home we’re really excited about our next sale,” commented Daniel Fielder, auctioneer and fine art specialist at McCartneys. “As a designer Laura Ashley was well-known and hugely respected, and to sell some of her family belongings is a real honour.”

Included in the sale will be an 18th Century Creil creamware basket and stand, a 19th Century ebony and brass octant, a German oak gothic cased mantle clock, a Japanese Figural Netsuke and an early 19th Century Staffordshire child's tea service. There will also be a variety of pictures and a Pedigree gold plush teddy bear.

The sale will be held at McCartneys’ Portcullis saleroom in Ludlow on Friday 16th April.

  • Farm Offers Two Businesses In One

    • Argoed Newydd 2
    • Argoed Newydd
An attractive farm in a truly wonderful setting is for sale by private treaty through McCartneys.

Argoed Newydd, which overlooks the Wye Valley and is seven miles from Llandrindod Wells, is run as a successful farm and bed and breakfast business.

The farm sits in around 124 acres and currently is a very productive livestock rearing holding, with both sheep and cattle.

The bed and breakfast side of the business is run from the lovely four bedroom modern farmhouse – with, of course, the traditional farmhouse kitchen - and makes the most of the property being in a popular tourist area, close the Elan Valley and Cambrian Mountians.

“Argoed Newydd is a truly splendid farm in a stunning setting,” commented Glyn Owens, Partner with McCartneys. “The current owners have made the most of the farm’s position by branching out into bed and breakfast, but, aside from that, the farm itself is very productive and would give purchasers wanting a sound upland grazing farm a prime opportunity to get on.”

Argoed Newydd is for sale by private treaty at offers in the region of £950,000.

  • Laura Ashley's Family Home Now Sold

    • Laura Ashley Family Home - Rhydoldog
McCartneys Estate Agents in Mid Wales are pleased to report contracts have now been exchanged on Laura Ashley’s family home.

The beautiful property known as Rhydoldog, is situated at Cwmdauddwr near Rhayader in Powys.

Laura Ashley’s daughter Jane said the sale brought with it a mixture of emotions. "Although I am very sad to be letting go of this magical house after 36 years, I am glad that it has been sold to people who love it as much as we do,” she said.

“We were extremely impressed with the response during the short time the property was available on the open market,” commented Jeff Williams, partner with McCartneys.

“Despite the economic situation, the historic connections and unrivalled location at the head of this most picturesque private valley resulted in positive genuine interest from all over the country.”

As well as the company benefiting from international internet presence by being on all major websites, the strong regional presence McCartneys commands enabled them to secure offers of an encourageable level to the Ashley family.

With this successful sale due to complete in the spring, the family have now instructed McCartneys as sole selling agents to handle the disposal of Ty Berth, near Rhydoldog which was more recently the home of the late Sir Bernard Ashley who passed away last year.

“This unique property had been designed by Sir Bernard Ashley and built to exacting standards with no expense spared to ensure it blends in perfectly with its surroundings,” said Mr Williams. “Through extensive use of oak and stone, vaulted cruck styled framework, attractive fireplaces, and designer kitchen and bathrooms, even though built in 2002 the property offers a wealth of character and appears to have been nestled in the valley for centuries”.

“I am sure with the similar location attributes as Rhydoldog, being close to vast walking, fishing and riding opportunities – in an area of outstanding natural beauty, demand for the property will again be strong.”

“With the family retaining their roots in existing local homes this may be the last opportunity for purchasers to secure an “Ashley” property in this idyllic valley.”

The family are still seeking a purchaser for their property in France.

  • Supermarket Boost to Housing Market

    7th September 2009

A supermarket giant’s planned arrival in a Powys town has given the local housing market a boost, according to a leading estate agent.

Tom Carter, manager of McCartneys in Newtown, says since the news broke that Tesco is opening a store in the area, business has definitely picked up.

“We’ve seen an increase in people interested in both buying and renting in Newtown,” said Tom. “The Tesco development is big news for the town, and is set to create up to 300 jobs. Obviously there will be people new to the area, moving here to work, and they will all need places to live. The level of interest in Newtown has definitely gone up.”

Work is now underway on the new supermarket, which is being built on the site of the former cattle market in Pool Road in the town.

  • Money, Money, Money

    1st September 2009

Whilst news reports indicate that we are slowly rising out of the depths of recession it seems that there are publicly funded organisations who have had money to spend (or is it burn) even in these impoverished times one notable example being a London Borough Council.

Such is the apparent housing shortage in their area the Council have since September of last year housed a mother and her four children in a privately owned 3-storey town house at a rent of £1,750 a week – some £91,000 a year! Similarly in another property the same Council houses tenants at £1,875 a week – close to £100,000 a year the rents in both instances having been authorised by the Department for Works & Pensions.

Here at McCartneys whilst we have a reputation of obtaining the best rent possible in the market place our clients can usually only dream of such figures - on a monthly basis that is!
