  • Records Broken at Brecon Saleroom

    • Brecon Furniture Sale
History was made at Brecon Furniture Sale on Friday 12th August 2011, when a unique collection of antiques and furniture mainly from the Plas Farm in Llangorse was offered for sale.
The sale attracted international interest as it consisted of some exceptionally rare pieces of 17th and 18th Century Oak Furniture. This included an exceptionally large oak dresser, which made £10,695. The dresser was believed to date back to 1850 and was purchased by a private buyer over the phone. A very unique 2 Board Dark Refectory Table dating back to the same period caused immense interest and although the bidding started at £2,000 the table was eventually knocked down at £11,500 to another undisclosed buyer over the phone, this set a new record for the sale at Brecon.

Other items of interest included a light coloured oak table from the dairy, which was damaged and surprised everyone by making £3,375 and far exceeded the guide of £700 and a Georgia half moon sideboard which made £5,500. An 18th Century bench, which went with the table, made £787.50 while a twelve-piece Shaghae dinner service made £450.

    The auctioneer Chris Jones commented
“One can never under estimate the power of the internet as pictures of all the items had been advertised on the McCartneys web site and this had attracted interest from everywhere, it has certainly put Brecon Furniture Sales on the map and radar from all the main antique dealers”
He concluded, “We have never had such a crowd and several records were broken which exceeded everyone’s expectations. We hope the saleroom has now well established itself an auction which can professionally and reliably deal with all types of house clearances.”

The next sale will be held on Friday 9th September and appointments can now be made to deliver items please ring Brecon Livestock Market on 01874 622386.

  • Nottingham Bear Baiting Jug found in Llandrindod Wells

    • Eighteenth Century Bear Baiting Jug
Whilst on a house call near Llandrindod Wells, auctioneer Daniel Fielder discovered this unusual piece of stoneware pottery.

Despite the Eighteenth century being seen as an age of enlightenment, bear baiting was a popular pastime in Georgian England and the subject was often depicted in wares from the Potteries. These would have been highly prized by their original owners, as they are today.

The auctioneers have expectations of £3,500-£5,000 for the jug, entered into the Ludlow sale on Friday, 18th February 2011.

For more information about the jug please call Mr Daniel Fielder on 01584 878822 or to view the sale details for the 18th please click on the following link - www.mccartneys.co.uk/content/Fine_Art/Sales_Calendar/

  • Strong Bids and a Real Buzz at Laura Ashley Auction

    • Bidding on the walnut desk stand which sold for £1100
Huge interest in designer Laura Ashley’s belongings led to fierce bidding at McCartneys’ Antique and Furniture sale in Ludlow.

Bidders in the packed saleroom saw more than 200 lots from the Ashley family home in Powys come under the hammer, after the recent sale of the property.

Interest in the auction was widespread, leading to a number of commission and telephone bids.

“It was a very successful sale, and there was a real buzz in the saleroom,” commented Daniel Fielder, auctioneer and fine art expert at McCartneys. “There were some lovely pieces from the Ashley family home, with many lots exceeding expectations.”

Notable items which sold well included a 19th Century Burr walnut desk stand (pictured), which reached £1100, a set if three sepia engravings by Boydell which sold for £700 and an oak model of a ship’s canon which made £420.

All of the items came from Rhydoldog House near Rhayder, which was the Ashley family home for more than 36 years. It is set in stunning countryside which is said to have inspired the designer’s floral prints.
