  • Longhorns Level at 5,500gns

    The Longhorn Cattle Society's Spring Show & Sale at Worcester resulted in a strong and continuing good fortune for the breed with a packed ringside of keen buyers and supporters from literally across the country, culminating in a top of 5,500gns for the Overall Show Champion "Carreg Icarus" from Bernard Llewellyn's herd at Trapp Castle, Llandeilo, Dyfed. The two year old bull, by Southfield Aristocrat that won Breed Champion, Gt. Yorks 2002 and out of Carreg Amy, Reserve Breed Champion, Royal Welsh, was finally secured by Anthony Carden, Hixon, Stafford for use in his "Au Natural" herd.
    Good bulls were in keen demand with a sixteen month old bull "Newton Santa's Little Helper" a third prize winner from David Walker's herd by Blackbrook Nimrod and out of Tetford Mistletoe a third prize winner from the Royal Show in 2007, selling at 3,000gns to JP Grainger, Lea, Gainsborough, Lincs.

    Females, particularly those with cows and calves were hotly contested peaking at a top of 1,900gns twice. Firstly for "Bramble Rosetta" a second calver with bull calf at foot having won 1st in the class from Paul and Yvonne Froehlich levelling to G Townend, Tewkesbury, Gloucs., another cow and calf "Barlings Holly" with a bull calf from MI & GS Thomas also levelled at a very creditable 1,900gns to D Shelton, Melton Mowbray, Leics. Mr Shelton was a busy buyer for cows and calves and finished taking a total of 8 cows and calves, his next highest purchase was 1,800gns for "Bejon Claire", bred by the late WJ Spalton, with a bull calf by Blackbrook Rebel from JA Warner's Charnwood herd in Leicestershire.

    John Warner's herd was in the "footlights" when his homebred heifer "Charnwood Arcadia" an 18 month old Louella Excalibur daughter hit the 1,300gns mark having won Reserve Champion and secured by JA Roberts & Son, Marton, Welshpool, Powys.

  • Blondes "Boost" up to 3,900gns

    There was plenty of "buying power" present for the quality stock at the Blonde Society's Annual Spring Show and Sale at Worcester. A strong clearance rate coupled with spirited bidding throughout confirmed this years' event as a resounding success.

    Top call of the day was for the youngest bull on offer and the last to be sold. The First Prize winner in the Junior Class, "Bostock Elite" from Miss C Boden was by 'Hillhead Anfield' and out of Hackleton Aimee that won Breed Champion, Royal Welsh 2008, 2009 and Breed Champion, Royal Show, 2009. The 14 month old hit 3,900gns and taken by SW Clarke, Dunstall, Burton on Trent.

    Mr Clarke was a keen buyer throughout the sale, taking another 3 bulls including 'Frondfedw Druid' a second prize bull from RG Davies at 3,500gns and 'Fronfedw Dyfed' a third prize winner at 3,000gns from the same herd. He also made his presence felt in the female section taking the Reserve Female Champion "Blackwater Docare" from IR Calderbank at 2,000gns.

    A consignment from D Skinner's "Allacott" herd enjoyed a close and keen following selling, to a top of 3,850gns for "Allacot Dude", a 21 month old son of 'Allacott Bulla', being taken by HR Thomas, Minsterley, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

    Another West Country consignment from G Haines, Cornwall enjoyed brisk bidding for "Retyn Descartes" a son of 'Whistley Dollar' out of a homebred Druk Lance cow peaking at a creditable 3,500gns to DC Rees & Son, Brecon, Powys.

    A strong entry from Bristol breeder David Knight culminated in a top of 3,500gns for "Doncombe Dunedin" a Druk Lance second prize winner taken by CW Thomas, Leysters, Leominster, Herefordshire.

  • Belted Galloway Southern Sale Tops at 2,000gns

    The Belted Galloway Cattle Society's Spring Show & Sale held at Worcester resulted in a keen and spirited demand culminating in a top 2,300gns for "Howemill Dark Hunter", a 19 month old bull by Howemill Indigo from Sir Michael Arbib's herd, the bull a second prize winner was secured by Allanby Park Estate, Binfield, Berks.

    The Howemill prefix was very much to the fore throughout the sale with females topping at 1980gns for "Southfield Top Hat" a 6 year old cow, due to calve in October. She went to PH & SE Powell, Shelsley Beauchamp, Worcester.

    A Lullenden cow with heifer calf from PN & PL Melland enjoyed a close following selling at a very creditable 1,420gns to JA Hopkins, Lymsham, somerset.

    The Reserve Champion in the show was "Kirkland Kestrel" a 2 year old bull from P & L Stafford having been placed first at North Somerset Show in 2009 sold briskly to 2,100gns to Cambridgeshire breeders, Brookfield Contracting & Farming at Longstanton.
