About the Market
Livestock has been traded in Knighton on the Englad / Wales border for hundreds of years and old photographs exist showing the cattle tied up in the main street and being traded long before our auction market as such was built.
The current market, which is owned by the Powys County Council, occupies the site of one of two former auction yards within the town. It is well supported by farmers east and west of Offa’s Dyke and has an enviable reputation. However, as in all auction markets, the reputation is built around one thing – livestock. This area of border country has livestock producers who are capable and competent. They are mindful of their heritage but are always looking for ways to improve their product.

From a North Herefordshire farming family, he gained a Diploma in Rural Estate Management at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester; qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 1982 and became a Full Member of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers in the same year.
Jenny Layton is one of the few female livestock auctioneers in Britain. After gaining a degree in Rural Enterprise & Land Management from Harper Adams University College, Jenny qualified as a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Fellow of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers in 2000.
